Tutor Spotlight: Sharon Bailey
What inspired you to volunteer for Literacy Buffalo Niagara?
I have always valued the significance of reading and literacy. I was an LBN tutor in Buffalo many years ago. Upon settling down in Niagara Falls, one of my primary objectives was to explore avenues where I could continue my passion for promoting literacy. In 2021, I had the honor of being appointed by Niagara Falls Mayor Robert Restaino to serve on the Niagara Falls Public Library Board of Trustees. During that same year, I also took on the role of a freelance contributor and weekly opinion columnist for the Niagara Gazette and Lockport Union-Sun & Journal. Despite this, I remained eager to find an opening to engage with an adult who recognized the importance of literacy and needed support to improve their reading skills.
Will you share a success story that you are proud of?
Nearly two years ago, when I first met my student, we talked about his goals. He mentioned that his primary objective was to obtain a driver’s permit and license. So, I used the NYS Driver’s manual as a reading aid. I am happy to say my student passed the written test a few months ago and is now in the process of scheduling driving lessons.
What important lessons have you learned as a tutor?
Teaching an adult to read requires respect and empathy. Letters and words are second.
What do you enjoy doing when you are not tutoring?
Being a freelance writer means I am constantly immersed in reading and writing, which I thoroughly enjoy. I love crossword puzzles or any type of word puzzles. I am the lead singer for the blues and rock cover band ‘The X-Statix’. I’m also passionate about cycling and hiking.
Is there anything else you would like to share?
Understand your student’s interests and adapt your teaching and materials to match their preferences. A wide range of resources are specifically designed to cater to the needs of emerging young readers. Feel free to customize the tutoring materials to align with the interests and objectives of adults as it helps maintain their focus and enthusiasm towards their reading goals.
