Building the skills and confidence to navigate health information and services.
Understanding health information can be challenging. Today, many important healthcare tasks also require people to use technology—from accessing a patient portal to scheduling an appointment or joining a telehealth visit.
Literacy Buffalo Niagara provides health literacy education and workshops that help community members build the skills and confidence they need to find, understand, and use health information in their everyday lives.
Our health literacy offerings are designed for community organizations, libraries, senior centers, community centers, and other groups that want to provide members with practical information and skills.
What Can I Learn?
We can tailor health literacy topics to each group’s needs and interests. Presentations and workshops may cover topics such as:
- Finding and understanding health information online
- Navigating healthcare websites and patient portals

- Understanding common healthcare terms and information
- Finding reliable health information online
- Using digital tools to manage healthcare
- Preparing for appointments and communicating with healthcare providers
- Understanding how literacy and digital skills can affect access to healthcare
Topics and activities are adapted to the audience, setting, and amount of time available.
Workshop topics include Healthcare & Digital Health, Telehealth, Digital Health Literacy & Preventative Health.
Who Is This For?
We can provide health literacy education for small or large groups in a variety of community settings.
We have worked with organizations such as:
- Public libraries
- Senior centers
- Community centers
- Community organizations
- Medical Providers
- Health Insurance Providers
- Local Businesses
- Other groups serving adults in our community
Programs can be designed for a specific audience or offered as a general community education opportunity.
How Does It Work?
Health literacy workshops are arranged through community partners, organizations, and businesses rather than through individual student enrollment.
LBN can work with your organization to identify topics that are relevant to your audience and determine the best format for your group. We may offer presentations as a single session or as part of a series, depending on the organization’s needs and available funding.
Our goal is to provide practical information that participants can use in their everyday lives.
Why Health Literacy Matters
Finding, understanding, and using health information is an important part of managing your health and making informed decisions.
As more healthcare services move online, digital skills are increasingly connected to health literacy. Our experience providing digital literacy instruction has shown us that many adults need support navigating both the technology and the information involved in accessing healthcare.
Health literacy education allows community members to build these skills in a supportive, accessible environment.
