DIGI-SKILLS

Build the digital skills you need for everyday life.

Technology is part of everyday life, from keeping in touch with family and friends to managing appointments, using healthcare services, and finding information online.

Literacy Buffalo Niagara provides free, one-on-one digital literacy tutoring for adults who want to feel more comfortable and confident using computers, tablets, and smartphones.

Whether you’re learning how to use email, navigate the internet, access a healthcare portal, or join a telehealth appointment, a trained volunteer tutor can help you build the skills you need.

What Can I Learn?

Digi-Skills tutoring is personalized to your needs and goals. Depending on what you want to learn, your tutor may help you with:

  • Basic computer skills
  • Using a smartphone or tablet
  • Navigating the internet
  • Setting up and using email
  • Finding trustworthy information online
  • Accessing and using healthcare portals
  • Preparing for and joining telehealth appointments
  • Using websites and online services
  • Building confidence using technology on your own

Students have access to Northstar Digital Literacy, which provides lessons and assessments covering a variety of essential digital skills. Your tutor may use Northstar as part of your learning, along with other activities and resources that fit your specific needs.

What Can Better Digital Skills Help Me Do?

Digital skills can make everyday tasks easier and help you stay connected and independent.

Depending on your goals, you may be able to use your new skills to:

  • Send and receive emails
  • Search for information online
  • Access important accounts and services
  • Communicate with family and friends
  • Manage healthcare information online
  • Prepare for a telehealth appointment
  • Use a computer, smartphone, or tablet with greater confidence
  • Complete everyday tasks that require technology

Your goals are your own. Your tutor will help you focus on the skills that are most useful to you.

How Does Digi-Skills Tutoring Work?

Digi-Skills tutoring is one-on-one and personalized. You will work with a volunteer tutor who will help you focus on the digital skills that are most important to you.

Tutoring typically takes place over 6–8 sessions, depending on your needs and goals. Sessions are held at a public library.

Because Digi-Skills tutoring is individualized, tutors work with students who have specific learning goals rather than providing on-demand technology assistance.

What Digi-Skills Tutoring Does—and Doesn’t—Provide

Digi-Skills is designed to teach you digital skills so you can use technology more independently. It is not a technology help desk or on-demand troubleshooting service.

Our tutors do not provide:

  • Device repair
  • On-the-spot technical troubleshooting
  • Open drop-in technology assistance
  • Ongoing technology support after your tutoring sessions are complete
  • Completing digital tasks for you

If something isn’t working on your device, we can help you learn the skills needed to use it, but our tutors are not technology repair technicians.

Who Is Digi-Skills For?

Digi-Skills is for adults of any age who want to build basic digital skills and become more comfortable using technology.

You do not need to be an expert—or even feel comfortable using technology—to get started. The program is designed to meet you where you are and help you build the skills you need.
