Build the reading and communication skills you need for everyday life.
Literacy Buffalo Niagara offers free, one-on-one tutoring for adults who want to improve their reading and speaking. Each student has different goals, so tutoring is tailored to fit each person’s needs.
Whether you want to read better, communicate better, or reach a personal goal, a trained volunteer tutor can work with you one-on-one to help you make progress.
What Can I Learn?
Your tutor will help you find the skills you want to improve and create a learning plan based on your goals and needs. Depending on your goals, tutoring may include:
- Reading and understanding everyday information
- Building vocabulary and reading comprehension
- Practicing speaking and communication
- Improving reading confidence
- Working with forms, letters, signs, and other everyday materials
- Developing skills that can help you at work or in your community
- Working toward personal reading and communication goals
Your learning plan is made just for you. As your skills and goals change, your tutor can change your learning activities to help you keep improving.

What Can Stronger Literacy Skills Help Me Do?
Reading and speaking skills can make daily tasks easier and help you feel more confident and independent.
Students work toward goals that matter to them. Depending on your goals, stronger literacy skills may help you:
- Read to a child or grandchild
- Read mail, bills, or other important information
- Complete forms and applications
- Better understand written instructions
- Communicate with your child’s school or teacher
- Prepare for work or pursue employment goals
- Continue your education
- Accomplish a personal goal that is important to you
Your learning plan is made just for you. As your skills and goals change, your tutor can change your learning activities to help you keep improving.
Why Choose One-On-One Tutoring?
Everyone learns in their own way. One-on-one tutoring lets you focus on the skills that matter most to you and work at a pace that fits your needs.
Your tutor will use activities and materials that connect to your goals, interests, and daily life. You and your tutor work together as a team to help you improve.
Is This Program Right For Me?
Literacy Buffalo Niagara focuses on basic reading and communication skills. Our programs help adults build the skills they need for daily life, work, and personal goals.
Our tutors are NOT subject-area tutors or advanced English instructors. We are NOT able to provide:
- Tutoring in specific academic subjects such as math, science, social studies, or other content areas
- Instruction focused specifically on writing or advanced writing skills
- Advanced English instruction for adults who already have strong English skills
- Accent reduction or pronunciation training for advanced English learners
- Help with forms or paperwork when you need it — Tutors teach students the skills to do everyday tasks on their own; they do not fill out forms or paperwork for students.
If you’re not sure if your goals fit our program, please call us at 716-876-8991. We are happy to talk with you about what you want and help you decide if Literacy Buffalo Niagara can help.
