Student Spotlight: John
Meet our student John and get inspired by his journey to build literacy skills in LBN’s tutoring program!
John grew up in Buffalo, New York, as part of a big family: 7 brothers and 6 sisters. He attended LaSalle High School in Niagara Falls and later built a life working in a variety of jobs, including as a janitor, dishwasher, and welder. He’s also the proud father of 4 children.
When John decided to join the literacy program, his goal was simple but powerful — to improve his reading so he could raise his quality of life. Although he had managed to adapt to living with low literacy over the years, John knew that stronger reading skills would open new doors and make daily tasks easier.

John says one of the best parts of the program has been working with his tutor. “We have a great relationship and work really well together,” he shared. With that support, John has faced one of his biggest challenges — gaining confidence in himself as a learner.
John’s already seeing progress. Reading items like mail and sign notices has become easier, and he’s proud of moments when he’s been able to apply for and get new jobs. “My tutor and friends have really encouraged me,” John said.
As for what’s next, John plans to keep improving his reading and writing skills. And when asked what advice he’d give to someone thinking about joining a program like this, his words are inspiring:
“Don’t be afraid to admit you need help. No one will think less of you — they’ll be proud of you. Take the first step. Find someone that cares.”
John’s story is a reminder that learning is a lifelong journey, and it’s never too late to take that first step toward a better future.
