Now more than ever, it is important to support our neighbors in the community who are struggling with their literacy, ESL, or English language skills. The root of low literacy varies; it could stem from a lack of access to resources and opportunities that others enjoy. Unfamiliarity with the local language is also a barrier to success — according to 2023 U.S. Census estimates, 7.2% of Erie County's population is foreign-born, i.e. immigrants or refugees, with recent arrivals to the country being most at-risk.
To create a stronger community, we first tend to the individual by making sure everyone has what they need to thrive. Through our free tutoring programs, Literacy Buffalo Niagara nurtures literacy and language skills so adults can grow to their full potential. |
